THORACIC SURGERY
Thoracic Surgery consists of operations of the lung, pleura and mediastinum. Fifteen % of all surgical procedures of the department are performed in this division with the main focus on tumor surgery. Together with the I. and III. Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Radiotherapy we have established neoadjuvant concepts in the therapy of advanced lung cancer.
Lung Cancer
  1. In cooperation with the Center of Integrative Oncology (CIO) patients with lung cancer are treated based on the most recent treatment guidelines, including patients with non-small lung cancer.
  2. The Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) was extended in the last 5 years. Therefore, in a lot of cases thoracotomy can be avoided.

Minimally invasive Procedures
  1. thoracoscopic bulla-resection with pleurodesis in case of repetitive pneumothorax
  2. pleurodesis of malignant pleural effusuions
  3. thoracoscopic thymectomy (resection of the thymus gland),
  4. resection of paravertebral neurinomas
  5. thoracoscopic enucleation of esophageal leiomyomas
  6. myotomy in case of therapy-resistent esophageal spasms
